Wacom Feel Driver for Acer Spin 5 2020 edition

Postby thesgsniper » Mon 27. Jul 2020, 18:15

The Acer Spin 5 2020 edition supposedly has a Wacom AES 1.0 Panel with 4096 levels of pressure. However, acer did not include a pen driver and instead relies on a Microsoft Default Pen Driver, presumably Windows Ink API.

I tried installing the drivers from this link: https://us.wacom.com/en/feeldriver/
However, an error message comes up saying that "A compatible tablet was not found".

Either Acer is lying about their product, or there's an inf file that has not been updated with the latest devices.

Why is this a problem? While there is pressure sensitivity, there is no way to reassign the pen buttons, and the pressure sensitivity feels severely limited, ie. it feels more like 0-256 levels instead of 4096 levels of pressure. It also cannot compare to the fluidity of my old Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 260, which has a wacom aes panel pre-1.0, with 2048 levels of pressure.

Please forward this to the driver support team, hopefully its just a line in the .inf file that needs to be updated with the new device.

Are you sure this is AES and not MPP (Microsoft Pen Protocol)? Please check with Acer first. I'm not sure which version you own but our driver is probably only supporting the SP513-51N and the SP513-52N versions.

This is where I got my model from, but Acer also sells this model in the EU under the sp513-54N. My Bamboo Ink stylus works in Wacom AES Mode. My Bamboo Smart Stylus for Select 2 in 1 also works, and that is exclusively Wacom AES, as does even the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 260 rechargeable pen. The Acer has its own rechargeable pen that goes into the slot like the Yoga 260, so it's definitely Wacom AES.

The models you listed are of course the older ones with MPP.

Another worrying thing is that Acer no longer ships the Acer Spin 5 2020 with the Wacom Feel Sticker, is something going on between Acer and Wacom? They pulled all mention of wacom on the store page, even though this page https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/series/spin5 still says its Wacom AES, and my old wacom aes pens still work.

Interesting. I will give this feedback to the driver team.
What does Acer say about this?

They have not replied thus far. I am worried that the panel is an Elan Touch IC, however in device manager it is hard to figure out which is the digitizer. Indeed looking at Device Manager, there is I2C HID Device, Intel(R) HID Event Filter, HID-compliant vendor-defined device. Nothing that points to elan or wacom. How the lenovo thinkpad yoga supercapacitor pen could be compatible is a mystery, unless Acer somehow did not expose the digitiser as wacom or elan.

Hello, is there an update on this matter? I'm kind of afraid that the issue with pressure sensitivity is worse than i thought, as it might have nothing to do with drivers, and everything to do with Acer's drivers for wacom aes panel. This is quite bad for wacom too, as it could potentially spoil wacom's name, seeing as Acer advertises wacom feel stickers on all their models. Basically, the issue is that lines do not taper well at the end in any art programs. the behavior is strange, when I initially put down the stroke, the start of the stroke is all good, but then afterwards I cannot reduce the pressure any more than 1/2 of the width of the line no matter how far I draw. This means I always create a stroke that tapers at the start nicely, but then never goes back to zero pressure ever again until the stroke is released.

This link has a user using the same device have the same problem in Krita. I have confirmed it to be an issue in any program that uses windows ink api.

I have made a thread on the acer community forums. I will get in touch with Acer Support soon.
